Katrina Klap
single
2/5
Will Dukes
Many in the black community feel that some Americans would sooner celebrate a national Nat Turner Day than admit that race just might have factored into the government's belated relief efforts to New Orleans' (mostly black) victims of Hurricane Katrina. (FEMA to said victims: "I'll be there in five mintues"; five hours later: "I'll be there in five minutes.") That said, Mos Def's contention--on the dismal "Katrina Klap"--that Mr. President is a "natural ass," prone to "treating niggas worse than they treat the trash," is hardly a novel one. Or a particularly sincere one, at that.
Devoid of whatever deep-seated emotions that caused Kanye to convey similar sentiments in his now-infamous gaffe-heard-around-the-world, Mos effectively wastes four minutes and 34 seconds of whistling, ragga-tinged crunk junk, by yawning out uninspired rhymes that are too lethargic to be considered even lip service. True story: Mos Def doesn't care about "conscious" rap music.
