Can I Have It Like That
(Star Track)

Will Dukes
Pharrell Williams' new dolo offering "Can I Have It Like That" is not, in any way, shape, or form, a good look. The song sleepily sports a monotonous synth drone and a pair of toasty snares that bump but go nowhere. The hook, which (barely) features a phoned-in Gwen Stefani, is the sine qua non of bo-ring. (Stefani sounds as though she had been text-messaging someone up until an engineer stuck a "YOUR TURN NOW!" cue card in her face.) Not even the snazzy jazz breakdown at the beginning of verse two is enough to lively up the dead-ass air here. Gone is that sort of melodic, T-Mobile-ringtone coziness that used to typify the 'Tunes' best material. In that stead are Pharrell's offbeat flow--does he sound like a drunken Talib Kweli or is it just me?-- and a stale, muted mood brought on by a beat that just lies there lifelessly, too afraid to try anything terrible. Three words, Pharrell: Free Chad Hugo!
